First of all we will start off with our Kids Top Toys review:
The Lego City Harbour Review - Lego 4645
So here we are taking a look at one of the big Lego sets for Christmas 2011, the Lego city harbour, also known as Lego 4645.
Starting off with the basics of this set you get approximately 551 Lego pieces, for Lego mini figures and build and play range for children no younger than six years old.
Let's start off by looking at the four Lego mini figures that you get with this harbour set, starting off with the lorry driver or truck driver as you may call him, he comes with a red top and green dungarees, the head sculpt on this figure is nothing to write home about and there are no detailed markings on the back, it is quite a standard figure, although I should note that he has painted on glasses, next we have the fishermen who is dressed in a blue shirt and blue dungarees, again there is nothing really to make it stand out, although I do really like the fishing hat. The two remaining figures that you get in this set are the crane operator which comes in a orange jumpsuit and orange hardhat and finally we have the ship's captain which does come with a nice detailed shirt and tie combo which I've not really seen before.
So let's move on to the actual features of this Lego set, starting off with the Lego truck. The Lego truck is a really cool design, the front cabin of the truck can fit to Lego mini figures quite comfortably, the detail on this truck is fantastic like the wheel trim guards at the front, the back of the truck has a tipper action, so you can deposit any cargo that you may be carrying at the port to be loaded onto the container ships. I think this is a lovely addition and a great design.
Next we come to the actual harbour itself, the harbour is really dominated by the large yellow crane that sits on top of the office. The crane itself is very colourful, maybe a bit too colourful for me but kids will love it. The lever on the side of the crane can be used to lower and raise the grab bucket and this works reasonably well. The only one thing I would mention here is that Lego have included a very long piece of string which does need to be cut to the correct length and this can become a bit frustrating, I think younger children may struggle.
Leading on from the crane we have the conveyor belt which works nicely and adds an authentic touch to the set. Moving on we have the office, which to be honest is very basic and very plain and this part is the only slight let down for me. What I did like the various accessories that you get like the fishermen with his called fishing rod which actually has string through it, the rat, a stand which holds the broom and shovel and even the lampposts which give the overall effect of a working harbour.
Finally we come to the large cargo ship, this is a nice build and comes with some great features, there are two cargo holds with room below to hold your ships bounty and goods, the captain's bridge is okay and features some nice additions like the radar mast and binoculars. There is even a separate section where the captain can sleep.
So to conclude I think this is an okay set, it could have been better, it could've been worse. The build itself was very easy and possibly a tad dull, as mentioned already the younger children may have some trouble when it comes to threading the rope through for the winch cable. But the main saving grace of this Lego set is when it comes to playability, this harbour set is just a lot of fun, there is so much for kids to do and you can really build out this set. This is one set that you will keep going back to play with again and again.
