REVIEWS:
I am a big fan of Lego, and have been for many many years. I can remember from a very early age the magic of building things out of plastic bricks. So it was with great excitement that I unpacked this set and sat down to build all of the separate models.
The set comes in several parts. There is the engine, a tanker carriage, a car transporter complete with two cars, a container carrier with a couple of different containers. There is also an articulated lorry to carry the containers and a crane to lift the bits on and off. It took me a few hours to build all of the parts. The detailing is fantastic - the crane driver rotates, the characters can be removed from the train and the trucks and the train driver even has a mug of tea in his hand!
And once I had built the train I set up the track and began to play with it as a train set. And a surprisingly good one it is too. Because of the design of the completed vehicles I soon forgot that I was playing with Lego. The infra red remote control gives you surprisingly fine control over the train in both directions and allows a variety of speeds from a slow manoeuvre to instant derailment. The pets loved it too! Everything feels sturdy and very well built, and despite the occasional accident everything remained in one piece.
A few hours later and I was still thoroughly absorbed with the set - my kids helping me to crane cars from one carriage to another. Brilliant!
The one and only drawback with this set is that every other Lego set I have owned - especially the Technical ones - comes in a box which has compartments to store the set in when you have finished playing. This does not, so once you have emptied the (quite big) box it is pretty much useless, and I have had to buy a plastic storage box to keep the bits in.
Oh - and there isn't really enough track to really build more than a rudimentary set. But pay day is coming soon, and the accessories look reasonably enough priced, so I may well just expand my set and fill the lounge with my new hobby!
I think like most people when I was a kid I loved Lego. I played with it all the time, we had plastic trays filled with bits and pieces which we used to build all kinds of stuff. The most elaborate piece of Lego I had was a space ship that had magnets so smaller ships could attach to the main one and it had a battery powered noise that went "POW!" and "KRRXZT!". I never had anything this cool but now I'm in my mid-twenties I finally have one - though I gave this as a present to my nephew rather than keep it for myself!
Even though he's 7 and I'm 26, I think I got more out of it than he did! I helped him put it together and was amazed at how much there is to do with this set. The trains are remote controlled, the cranes work, the trains open up so you can see inside, the tracks have various combinations so you can have fun creating new paths for your train to run on - I wish I'd had this when I was a kid!
Besides the train there's a flat car, tank car, and container car as well as various cargo to place onto the train's carriages like different coloured containers and cars. I also got bored seeing my nephew successfully pilot the train along the rails so it never derailed so I took over the controls and was pleased to see the train got up to a decent pace so it can be derailed. Then I saw my nephew's look and gave him back the controller.
If you're at all a big fan of Lego then chances are you've got a ton of Lego stuff already so you can construct a city with the Lego you already have and add this as a railway system to the city.
All in all, I would say I was incredibly impressed with the way the set works and my nephew absolutely loves it. Hours of fun with a fantastic toy (just remember the batteries!).
